By now many of you have seen and heard of UK-based magazine Midcentury. Midcentury: The Magazine for Modern People isthe brainchild of Tabitha Teuma who sought to fill a void in the UK home publication market. Each issue in itself is a wonderful collection of stunning photos and articles about Midcentury Modernism from our neighbours in the UK market.

The second issue of UK-based biannual, Midcentury magazine has just landed on many a stylish doormat, and is now stocked in select UK bookstores. Inspired by the quest to furnish and renovate her 1960s London apartment, Tabitha Teuma set up this publication at the start of 2011 and runs it from the very original G-plan dining table at one end of her living room. Created with modern design enthusiasts in mind, whether experienced collectors, complete novices, or those who just enjoy a nose around somebody else’s home, Midcentury champions this period of design and highlights its continued relevance to modern living.

This year began with a New Year’s resolution to ‘do it’ rather than just think it!

"I’d been running an arts journal for a while and toying with the idea of starting my own publication. Having been a fan of mid-century design for some years and having long bemoaned the omission of a publication on the topic here in the UK, I set out to create one myself. For people just like me! Here’s a few of my favourite images from our recent feature on a 1960s ranch-style bungalow in Berkshire. Hoping this whets your mid-century appetite!"

Moby's Castle

You may have come across this earlier this year but it still seems to come up in discussions around the table at our house. I am still a purist and argue that you can't shoehorn modernist design into a medieval exterior but friends beg to differ. They always win the argument when they remind me of Moby's Castle.

Moby, yes that Moby of electronic pop music fame, purchased a literal castle in the Hollywood Hills.

Built in 1927 the house was dubbed Wolfs Lair. The castle takes up about 3.3 acres of land overlooking Lake Hollywood and has a grand total of eight bedrooms and 5 1/2 bathrooms in about 6,500 square feet of living space. Perched on three acres above the Hollywood Reservoir, the 1920′s castle was revamped with a mid-century modern aesthetic.

“Even though the house is from 1927, I didn’t want to fill it with big, heavy furniture from the 1920s, and I didn’t want to fill it with strange plastic 21st-century furniture,” he said.

One cool thing to note... the house had a secret tiki room that remained locked for some time. Check out the photos below. So what do you think? Does it work for you?

What You Can Get for $12mil in L.A. - The Famous Mid-Century Farralone Estate

It has been referred to as “The great glass mansion that perches like a lighted jewel on its own hilltop”. No wonder, with its 16 ft. ceilings the interior is surrounded by glass walls that open seamlessly to the outdoor spaces. Today the property has been painstakingly restored to its pristine original condition and continues to sparkle and amaze.

The estate known as “Farralone” was commissioned by Dora Hutchison, the heiress to the Chase Manhattan Bank fortune. It was completed in 1951 by Pereira & Luckman, the architects most famous for building this “trophy” residence, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Kennedy Center, The Transamerica Pyramid building in San Francisco and the master plan for the City of Beverly Hills.

The parties hosted there between 1951-1954 were legendary and included such guests as Lucille Ball and Ava Gardner. Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli renewed their wedding vows there. Frank Sinatra leased the house for several years. During that time Marilyn Monroe resided in the guesthouse and had one of her last photo shoots there as well as the infamous rendezvous with Jack Kennedy. The estate earns a significant of money each year from movie location filming. More recently it has become a popular filming location for "Mad Men". Among the property's film credits are "Dreamgirls" (2006), "Bewitched" (2005), "Swordfish" (2001) and "Ali" (2001).

The 10,000 sq. ft. main estate, surrounded by two acres of rolling lawn, is up a long, winding private road on 5.5 acres. It includes 4 bedrooms/5.5 baths, a grand gallery and three lower level private offices complete with a conference room. The one bedroom/1.5 bath guest house is 1,000 sq. ft. with its own pool. A detached gym is located adjacent to the stunning 50 ft. pool.

A 9.5 acre section, out of site from the residence, has a tentative tract map divided into 13 lots and is currently used as a vineyard with horse riding trails. In addition to the large motor court there is parking for 200 cars.

This fine example of mid-century magnificence could not be replicated today. It is beyond a doubt one of the most private, dazzling and important estates in all of southern California. Offered at $12,000,000

In all the white noise that has begun surrounding the consumption of mid-century style, here comes another book that looks at the advertising of the era. Taschen is releasing "Mid-Century Ads: Advertising from the Mad Men Era"

Gleaned from thousands of images, this companion set of books offers the best of American print advertising in the age of the “Big Idea.” At the height of American consumerism magazines were flooded with clever campaigns selling everything from girdles to guns. These optimistic indicators paint a fascinating picture of the colorful capitalism that dominated the spirit of the 1950s and 60s, as concerns about the Cold War gave way to the carefree booze-and-cigarettes Mad Men era. Also included is a wide range of significant advertising campaigns from both eras, giving insight into the zeitgeist of the time. Bursting with fresh, crisp colors, these ads have been digitally mastered to look as bright and new as the day they first hit newsstands.

This two-volume set contains over 700 pages of advertisements from the '50s and '60s, including full-color ads and interesting insights from authors Jim Heimann and Steven Heller. Auction Block: Kenneth Laurent House by Frank Lloyd Wright

Located in Rockford, Illinois the Kenneth Laurent house was originally designed by Wright for disabled veteran Kenneth Laurent, during the years 1949 and 1952. The one-story house has a footprint of 2500 square meters featuring three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a long bow-like eclipsed shape. As with many of Frank Lloyd Wright's other homes, the Kenneth Laurent house displays custom interior design elements all included in the sale of the home. These include a pair of barrel chairs, panel armchairs, six hassocks, various tables, wrought iron fireplace grates, slatted wall lights and decorative screens. This is a reasonable steal at auction for $500,000.00 to $700,000.00 USD. (And I say that considering a 2 bedroom house here in the Bay Area easily costs this without the architect or history.)

Future Thinking, the Kross Wood Shelf

I want to run and own a shop. No seriously. I'll let you all in on a secret. Ever since I was little I wanted to run a store of my own. My entrepeneurial spirit was developed by the age of 6 and slowly but surely I've been waiting for the day where I find the location of my dreams to throw the doors open wide. From my online sales to running my own pop-up shop, all of it has been aimed at gaining more experience and testing some ideas on how I want to run my store.

I grew up in the south where general stores and corner shops were a way of life. Over the years I've collected and curated many furniture and household items all with the purpose of being in the shop on opening day.

While researching display units, I came across this piece which I know I need. The question is, do I need this for my home or the shop, the design is stunning. Introducing the Kross Wood Shelf by Thai design company Studio 248.

Moving In: The Jigsaw Residence

George Nelson Retrospective at the Vitra Museum
Nelson was one of the most influential figures in American design during the second half of the twentieth century. With an architectural degree from Yale, he was not only active in the fields of architecture and design, but was also a widely respected writer and publicist, lecturer, curator, and a passionate photographer. His office produced numerous furnishings and interior designs that became modern classics, including the Coconut Chair (1956), the Marshmallow Sofa (1956), the Ball Clock (1947) and the Bubble Lamps (1952 onwards). This same exhibition will be opened from October 29th, 2011 at the Bellevue Arts Museum in Seattle (until February 12th, 2012.

California Design: 1930 - 1965 "Living in a Modern Way"
Now showing at LACMA, this exhibition is the first major study of California midcentury modern design. With more than 300 objects—furniture, ceramics, metalwork, fashion and textiles, and industrial and graphic design—the exhibition examines the state’s role in shaping the material culture of the entire country. Organized into four thematic areas, the exhibition aims to elucidate the 1951 quote from émigré Greta Magnusson Grossman that is incorporated into the exhibition’s title: California design “is not a superimposed style, but an answer to present conditions…It has developed out of our own preferences for living in a modern way."

Hi all, my name is Marco and I’m the guy behind Mid-Century Home, the blog about mid-century design and architecture.

I’m thrilled to write again for deedee9:14 and today I want to share with you one of my preferred house renovations found in my favorite design magazine: Case da Abitare.

You would never believe that the amazing house below used to be a Shell gas station between the years 1956 to 1986 in Berlin Germany.

Juerg Judin, an art dealer and collector, spent three years renovating this former mid-century gas station in the Schöneberg district in Berlin. Judin is a gallery owner from Zurich that spotted the abandoned gas station in one of his trips to Berlin. The long since defunct station immediately aroused his curiosity and he decided to purchase the land, the bar, and the pump with the intention of converting it into his residence and private art gallery. Mr. Judin bought the station -- unoccupied since 1986 -- for 500,000 euros ($740,000) in 2005. Over the next three years, he restored the existing building, erected a new wing and created an idyllic outdoor garden.

The painstaking restoration included the preservation of the original tiles and plate glass windows used in the former dining area.  The owner required more space to house not only his personal art collection but to also serve as his living quarters. A cube-like structure was added to the grounds with the first floor serving as the gallery and living room. The new structure was designed such that it looked out upon the garden installation and the ex-pump porch.

When asked about his favourite part of this unique home, the owner stated that the industrial styled kitchen appealed to him most. Known for catering his own art functions, Judin could now prepare meals for those guests who attended exhibitions in the first floor gallery. The goal was to maintain the same feel of the live/work space as inspired by the gas station. The kitchen and this informal seating area are located in what was once the gas station's auto shop. The red trim throughout the property is a nod to the gas station's original color scheme.

The gas station's former sales room is now a dining room and occasional workroom. Floating above the mid-century table (by Florence Knoll) and Eames chairs is a one-off chandelier designed by the second-generation Bauhaus architects Martin Elsaesser and Ernst May dating back to 1952.

Only the outside was completely re-designed becoming a Chinese concept kind of garden with three kind of trees only -the Three Friends of Winter- pines, bamboo and plum trees.

History repeats itself. And in the case of Mid-Century design it is repeating itself as fast as rabbits right now. Shopping and acquiring MCM pieces can be daunting when true period originals can cost a month's rent. Amongst the tiers of options available to people who love the look, there are companies that still produce MCM styled pieces today that are more modestly priced and definitely within reach.

One such company is Thrive Home Furnishings. They've hopped on the bandwagon of all that is MCM and produce beautiful mid-century styled pieces today. Some pieces are closely modeled after recognizable classics while some are well how we shall we say, a bit more than inspired by a classic.

Thrive is definitely for those people who want the look, still want great craftsmanship, but don't want to break the bank. MCM purists would not necessarily agree but here is another shop to add to your arsenal.

Minwoo Lee has designed two pieces that immediately caught my attention. First, let's look at her beautifully crafted Klassiker Lounge Chair that will no doubt make you think it was a distant cousin of the Eames LCW chair. The Klassiker is also the first ever lounge chair designed by Minwoo and we say it's a great effort.

Also a favourite is Minwoo's TopLighting pendant lamp which draws its inspiration from a traditional Korean top made of steel and ash wood.

I just purchased two of these and wanted to take a moment to share my warm and fuzzies with you over these tables. The Series 001 Side Table designed by Brian Hanger is handcrafted from solid walnut and makes me wonder how I'd gone without them for so long. Rodney Walker was a mid-century modern designer and builder who specialized in residential architecture in the Southern California area. He contributed three designs to Arts and Architecture magazine's Case Study House program during the late 1940s (Case Study House #16, #17, and #18).

Many of his homes were photographed by Julius Shulman for Arts & Architecture magazine, Better Homes and Gardens, Architectural Record, Sunset, and the Los Angeles Times Home magazine.

Rodney Walker was born in Ely, Nevada, on September 15, 1910. He attended Pasadena City College before transferring to University of California Los Angeles where he graduated with a degree in art. In 1937, Rodney and his wife Dorothea built their first house in West Los Angeles. Soon after, he went to work for Rudolf Schindler as a draftsman. Over the next thirty years, Rodney designed and built some 100 homes in Southern California. Rodney Walker died in 1986 at his home in Ojai, California.

Home + Laminate Shrine: The Wilson House

Over 12 years ago, the National Register of Historic Places granted landmark status to the Wilson house, a colourful shrine to the heritage of high-pressure plastic laminate, often called Formica. Ralph Wilson Sr., the late founder of Wilsonart International, now the nation's largest producer of decorative laminates, built the 3,000-square-foot model home in Temple, Tex., about 100 miles northeast of Austin, as an experimental showcase for Ralph Wilson Plastics. Together with Bonnie McIninich, his daughter, he drew up the plans and masterminded the extensive use of pink, turquoise, lemon, pumpkin, Glitter, Marble and Maple laminates as alternatives to building materials like drywall, wallpaper, paint, wood, ceramic tile and linoleum.

Take a trip down memory lane with this amazing home. The house is open for tours Monday through Friday by appointment. Additionally, the house is also used for corporate entertaining - the main purpose for which it was originally built.

Forty tables will be available in Hong Kong at the Herman Miller Reach event on September 16, 2011 and 40 will be available at the House Industries exhibition at the Herman Miller Tokyo Showroom on October 27, 2011. Missoni for Target: The Phenomenon

Many people, including yours truely, sacrificed sleep to brave the wee hours at home basking in the warm glow of their computer screens anxiously refreshing the Target website. Originally there had been no official word on when the Missoni for Target sale was going online other than a vague mention of "bright and early in the morning" on September 13. I like many others assumed midnight Eastern Standard Time so 9pm here in the West Coast would have been just perfect. Alas, many of us stayed glued to our computers watching Twitter updates until the launch at 6am EST (3am PST).

Target didn't have the technical side locked down or prepped as expected because earlier in the day savvy users found a way into a limited number of products via the mobile version of the Target website. even before shoppers could get their hands on items either in store or online, somehow products were already listed for sale on eBay.

There have been descriptions of the launch already using words like "frenzy, screaming, hoarding" and pushing as East Coast stores opened first. Within minutes the entire Target website was down.

If you're out at the stores today, please be careful. I thought the Orla Kiely sale was a madhouse but this beats all. Were you able to get any items yourself?

Mid-Century Mosaics

When you examine a lot of the furniture and architecture we tend to love as MCM enthusiasts, you quickly note how ornamentation was lacking. There was never an abundance of decorative design unless it truly supported the function of the structure. One style of art and decoration that was supported by the era were stunning abstract mosaics. Buildings of the time period, those that are still left standing and preserved still display some of the world's best mosaic work.

Mid-century mosaics have been catching my eye recently as I've become the owner of two amazing pieces. (See the first two shown below.) Check out more of what's on offer. Can't wait to hang these and hunt down more.

Recently I've moved into collecting tile and ceramic pieces. While I don't plan on trading one collection for another considering I love so many mid-century pieces, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out the brilliance of Stig Lindberg's ceramic tile works. The little fellow in blue is probably my favourite in my collection.

Many of you may recall an earlier blog post featuring Lindberg's famous Berså Collection of tableware created for Gustavsberg. The following tiles were works also created for Gustavsberg where Lindberg remained throughout his career as Art Director until 1980.

Yesterday found me and design pal Dana from Zainido Decor hopping a pre-dawn flight down to Los Angeles with hopefully a few hours spent shopping in Palm Springs. It was a quick trip and of course it got us extremely excited about the 2012 Modernism Show. In the limited time we had, we got to peek in on some of our favourite shops and also had lunch at the amazing new venue LuLu California Bistro.

Speaking of Palm Springs, we're already booked and housing is going fast for the February week in the desert. LuLu's is going to be party central for dining, drinks, and all kinds of mayhem so think about making your reservations for eating during Modernism Week 2012 early. It seems like every week I'm talking to someone about upholstery and fabric. While it's not my strong point, it comes with the territory when you love antiques and re-finishing gorgeous chairs and couches. A great new resource and one that will provide better context for many mid-century lovers is Knoll Textiles.

Knoll is known as one of the world's leading modern furniture design companies and has collaborated with such famous design greats as Mies van der Rohe, Eero Saarinen and Florence Knoll herself in its postwar production periods. Reflecting the mid-century Modernist movement, Knoll Textiles prioritized color and texture as primary design elements, unlike any other company of the time. Known for her “full design” approach to interiors, Florence Knoll (née Schust) started Knoll Textiles as a way to increase business for Knoll, the furniture company founded by her husband Hans Knoll. She wanted to develop a proprietary line of textiles focused on experimental fibers and materials that employed techniques in response to changing environments and needs.

Florence Knoll advised designers to consider a pattern's appropriateness on furniture and understood that by simply offering it in new colorways, a pattern could easily be reinvented. With her guidance, Knoll Textiles tested the limits of materials and were timeless in pattern and application. One of the first unusual textiles used as upholstery was webbing rejected for use by the government on a Jens Risom-designed chairs. The book shows patterns created through the years in extreme detail, documented period by period. With insightful showroom, fabric swatch and furniture photographs, as well as sketches and illustrations, every page of this encyclopedia has something to teach the reader.

This comprehensive book of the exhibit entitled Knoll Textiles: 1945–2010 is now available through Yale University Press as the exhibition catalogue for the recent showing.

On the Bookshelf: Saul Bass: A Life in Film & Design

Saul Bass (1920-1996) created some of the most compelling images of American postwar visual culture. People You Should Know: Organic Modernism

It seems like lately I've been writing a lot of posts about modern design that is directly influenced by mid-century styles and aesthetics. Add to the list Organic Modernism, a beautifully creative team from Brooklyn who've taken MCM inspiration to the next level. In their own words:

"Many masters of modernism believed that working people around the world should be able to afford and enjoy an aesthetic quality in their everyday lives. The great Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer once said that nothing is design until ordinary people use it. We share that same vision about design and are dedicated to bringing design to the masses."

San Francisco and Bay Area residents have another great vintage shop to add to their list of go-to destinations. Today I took a tour of Stuff on Valencia Street and here is how it breaks down.

The Location

The good news is, even before you get there is that they have their own dedicated parking lot. For those of us driving in from the East Bay or on the hunt for larger items we need a car for, it's a handy location you can get over to with ease. What other shop is open such amazing hours here in San Francisco?!!!

The Space and Selection

The 8,200-square-foot space boasts antique-and-modern pieces from the 50s and 60s. From Deco to Mid-Century, Mod to Atomic, STUFF’s stuff spans the range of iconic modern design eras. I myself had sensory overload and could barely decide what to focus the camera on, their stock is so great. Stuff easily boasts some of San Francisco's best dealers. Take your time, wander through slowly, and don't forget to look up as there are some amazing light fixtures or stacked items on nearly every surface. It's also a photo friendly shop so bring a camera!

The Prices

Given that we're talking about San Francisco, and also the fact that these are noted antique and vintage dealers, I'd definitely say the prices were good to fair. Pieces ran the gamut from low end pricing to high end so that Stuff accommodates almost any budget. (As a side note, I did come across some pieces Dana and I had sold at Alameda Point Vintage Fair last month so it was wonderful to see some old friends while wandering the aisles.) Again, these are dealer prices so don't come with a flea market or thrift store budget. Mid-century vintage is hot right now so expect to pay accordingly.

The Staff

Knowledgeable, helpful, and definitely the kind of shopping experience you want when hunting for antiques and vintage pieces. The owners of the place should seriously be proud not only of the space they've created but also the wonderful staff who man the store. I walked out with a couple extra pieces I might not have even noticed if not for all the help.

Overall I definitely think this is San Francisco's best place to hunt for dealer sourced treasures. Here are photos from my tour and more can be found online at my flickr stream.

If you're Canadian, EQ3 has been on your radar for some time as a local supplier of furniture and small homewares. San Francisco Bay Area locals are one of the few remaining US cities fortunate enough to have a retail shop located in Emeryville just next to Ikea at the Bay Street shopping centre.

EQ3 PLUS is a partnership between EQ3 and a growing list of iconic designer brands. This new collection features selectively chosen designs from outstanding European and American modern design leaders: Alessi, Stelton, Pablo, Design House Stockholm, Herman Miller, and Vitra.

Sadly, EQ3+ won't likely be challenging DWR here in the US as it's only slated to be available in Canada and London.

Products to Love Right Now by Casalinga

Casalinga was launched by ceramicist and designer Trine Weng in 2008 and has since become an established brand in modern Danish design. Casalinga is available in a large number of countries and is driven and characterised by equal parts functionalism, storytelling and quality. Trine Weng graduated as a ceramic designer from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design in London and as an industrial designer from The Danish Design School in Copenhagen and has also worked in a design studio in Milan.

Casalinga means "housewife" in Italian, but Casalinga's products are not what one would associate with a traditional Italian housewife. Casalinga's design stays true to an unmistakably Scandinavian expression.

Loving Right Now: Kokon Studio

I am madly in love with this bureau by designer Robert Maciejasz of Kokon studio in London. The solid oak bureau comes with a pull-out desk which makes saving space in a home working area just divine. The pull-out desk area provides space for using a computer or laptop, reading and writing as well as storing paperwork, files, books and stationery. The good news is, the entire unit is compact enough for use in small flats. So I designed a shelf unit and a pull-out desk, which can be pushed back when not in use. Simply gorgeous! This stunning home located in Mexico City was designed as a man-made pavilion for observing and living in close proximity to nature. Organized around an open landscape, the result is an L-shaped plan one room wide, an intersection of the two axes radiating from the central living / dining space in which all rooms flank the swimming pool and face the view of the park. The landscape was designed by Pamela Burton.

I'm a big music geek. Having grown up in an extremely musical family I had the advantage of always having amazing audio gear around. Even at a young age I inherited my dad's keen inner ear and played several instruments myself. My dad was a studio musician and played back-up for a lot of the Motown greats when he wasn't out on the road on tour. Family reunions regularly broke out into jam sessions that lasted for hours and easily would have rivaled even the Jackson clan. I'll always recall a fond childhood of recording sessions and album listening on my dad's knee with his massive headphones on.

Today, I love sharing my love of music with all my friends worldwide. I've maintained a steady collection of vintage and modern headphones so that I could create my own listening station. I've always been partial to photos of vintage hi-fi set ups in people's homes or those re-created by some of my favourite musicians.

Here are some quick snaps taken inside the SF Modernism Show. It was a small affair in comparison to events like Palm Springs and other Modernism Expos but the sellers were all wonderfully approachable and knowledgeable. I walked away with some total steals like a couple mint condition Cathrineholm bowls, a rare Dansk tray, and several pieces of pottery.

NBC's The Playboy Club

Last week we introduced you to ABC's new fall show Pan Am set in the 1960's age of glamorous air travel. The show's high-flying stewardesses are the focus and brought to question yet again the topic of mid-century era dramas that showed women in a sexist light.

In comes NBC's The Playboy Club. NBC bills the new show as a provocative new series that captures a time and place that challenged the social mores, where a visionary created an empire, and an icon changed American culture. Promotional spots for the 1960s-era drama describe Hugh Hefner's glitzy hangout as a "place where men hold the key, but women run the show."

Already, Gloria Steinem the face of the women's movement for more than four decades, has called for a boycott of the show. And like Pan Am both shows are standing in the shadow of AMC's Mad Men.

Mid-century nostalgia in the form of prime-time television is now the new trend. The clothes, the fashion, the lifestyles are still trending hot right now. Back in 2007, Mad Men seemed groundbreaking. Now, with two 1960s dramas due this fall, NBC and ABC are following suit behind AMC -- and that seems a lot like hopping on a new style bandwagon.

One surprising bonus is that Playboy head Hugh Hefner will be reopening a few clubs around the time of the show's premiere. The Playboy Club does however seem to be the only mid-century era show this fall that features a cast which isn't all white. Let's hope the set design is amazing and full of mid-century goodies.

Anatomy of An Obsessive Collector: Guest Post by Dana Lewis of Zainido Decor

Last night I was photographing an Italian rootbeer colored twisted stem goblet I had just acquired. While admiring the beauty of this piece, I realized, "Dammit, this is why I do this!"

The funny thing about this particular piece is that it's not my favorite color or necessarily my favorite style of glass, but to me it is simply a stunning piece. Ms. Dee has called me the "Glassy Lady" and asked me to write a piece for her blog and this is what inspired me.

Often times when I collect things, I want to get back to the root of why I collect. What draws my eye to a piece in a store of random things? What makes me buy this one but not that one sitting right next to it? My mantra is "collect what you love" but I believe before you do that, consider what makes you love it. I say this because often times you will discover your reasoning for why you love a piece will dictate how you collect.

Why do you collect what you do?
Is it because someone in your family had the prettiest one? Maybe as you got older, you could finally afford it or as a child you always wanted something but never got it.

A very close friend of mine had amassed a large collection of amazing action figures and hard-to-find robots. When I asked him why he collected, he said "because my father didn't think that having toys was something I should have." So when it came down to it he was collecting for the little boy and the adult that he was now. Fascinating.

For me, as a little girl, I can remember being entranced with my grandmother's perfume bottles. Their shapes, the stained glass and specifically blue glass appealed to me most. It reminded me of water captured in solid form.

I found through my own discovery that my love and appreciation of glass has even extended into my event design work, hence our 2008 Dining By Design table for DIFFA.

So, collecting at its purest is about acquiring the things that you like even love. Knowing why you collect makes this experience an even better one, because it takes you back to a place, person, or time that was endearing to you, so embrace it. You will find it takes your collecting to a whole new level.

File this post also under instant classics because once you see Brandon and Sundeep Morrison's work, you'll agree with me. Neither member of the couple have a formal background in furniture design or construction but it didn't stop them from launching their beautiful new shop whyrHymer in Los Angeles.

Their furniture and lighting pieces display a deep harmony with the materials and an affinity towards organic shapes that are usually the hallmark of decades of senior craftsmanship. What moved me more than the pieces themselves was the couple's generosity in giving back to others and their community. With each purchase they donate 3% of the sale price to a charitable organization and also encourage clients to match this donation.

I personally want several of their pieces and plan to pay their shop a visit on my next trip down to L.A. Visit their website to see more amazing work.

ABC's Pan Am

By now many of our US readers will have seen the trailers for the new ABC show Pan Am that debuts this September. The ABC drama "Pan Am" is set in the once-glam, early-1960s age of air travel and promises intrigue, sexiness, drama, and all manner of interesting high-flying scenarios.

There are two things the cast and producers of Pan Am would like potential viewers to know before buckling up for the premiere (on Sunday, Sept. 25): This show is not sexist, nor is it simply riding on the coattails that other ’60s-centric hit, Mad Men.

Pan Am centers on the onetime airline giant’s jet-setting stewardesses and their male counterparts in the cockpit. It’s what series creator/executive producer Jack Orman calls “sweeping and epic,” and all about “wish-fulfillment.” But at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour on Sunday, reporters targeted the sexism on display in the pilot (as evidenced by, for example, the ladies’ wearing of girdles and being subjected to weigh-ins).

Whether the show is sexist or not remains to be seen but as a die-hard fan of mid-century modernism I'm hoping we get more excellent set design and period styles.
